Ben Wei
1976.4.1生まれ。
サーフボードのシェイパー歴20年。カボ サン ルーカスでスタートし、
メキシコ、カリフォルニアのオーシャンサイドでキャリアを積む。
現在は千葉から、1999年より続ける自身のブランド『5050 Waveskates』を展開し、
日々新たなボードデザインを探求している。
エクスクルーシブモデルとしてLazyBoySkillの"Sex Machine, and CoreFighter"、
Zburhの"Waveskate"、"Upload"をシェイプ。8年間Gravity Skateboards teamに所属。
プロサーフチームのライダーの田中英義、森大樹、田嶋鉄平、加藤嵐、Zucchoらと共に、
サーフクロストレーニング用のスケートボード"Twist"をスタート。
音楽マニアで、"Jackson884"というバンドのトラックメーカー。
KORGの新しいVolca Synthesizersのプロモーションビデオも手掛ける。

ボードリズム ボードと音楽のマッチング (音楽的観点から見たサーフィン) 』
それぞれのボードにはそれぞれ個性がある。
反応の仕方、異なる波でのスピードの出し方、テイクオフのスピードなど様々だ。
ボードの性格に合わせるためには、まず、自分自身をその波長にチューンしなくてはならない。
もちろん、人それぞれ好きな音楽があると思うけど、
今回は、キミのボード、ライディングに合わせて、より頭をチューンナップしやすいように、
僕が個人的にセレクトしたオススメの音楽の例を、YouTubeのリンクと合わせて紹介しよう。
それぞれのスタイルのリズムを視覚的に表すために、これらの波長のイラストも付けよう。
Classic single fin longboard / クラシック・シングルフィン・ロングボード
クラシック・シングルフィン・ロングボードは反応がゆっくりで、
ターンの時にスムーズなラインを保つために、
スピードを落としてターンした後に、クルージングでスピードをUPさせる。
ライダーの身体の動きは最小限にする必要があって、巧みなフットポジションがボードの動きに影響してくる。
そんな人たちへのオススメの音楽はクラシックジャズ、もしくはブルース。

Twin keel fin fish / ツイン・キール・フィン・フィッシュ
ツイン・キール・フィッシュはグライドしやすく、スムーズな長い弧を描くターンができ、
正確な場所をプッシュすることで、水中からボードをリリースすることもできる。
そんな人たちへのオススメの音楽はソウル。

Classic Singlefin / クラシック・シングルフィン
クラシック・シングルフィンは、小さな体重移動でスムーズなグライドとドライブができる。
大きなセンターフィンが水中の深い位置にあることで、細かいターンをすることは非常に難しい。
ただし、十分にプッシュすることでタイトにターンすることが可能だ。
そんな人たちへのオススメの音楽はギターロック。

Alternative board / オルタナティブボード
オルタナティブボードは通常のサーフボードの形状とは異なり、見た目がユニークなものが多い。
マニューバーも独創的で、とてもファンで、時にクレイジーである。

High performance shortboard / ハイパフォーマンス ショートボード
ハイパフォーマンス ショートボードはフィンを抜くようなマニューバーをしやすく、
クイック且つ自由自在に動かすことができる。
ライダーは水面での薄いボードの“フロー”をキープするために、素早い動きが必要となる。
そんな人たちへのオススメの音楽はエレクトロハウス。

これらの例は、あくまでサーフィンを楽しむために“何”に乗ればいいかという１つの考え方。
音楽やサーフィンにルールは無い。楽しむためには、いろんな方法があるということだよ。

『Board Rhythm, matching your board to music (Surfing through a musical perspective).』
Each board has it's own personality, the way it reacts, the speed that it makes on different waves, takeoff speed etc.
To match your riding to your boards personality, you must tune yourself to the frequency of the board that you are riding.
Of course we all have our favorite music, but this time, I have personally selected some recommended styles of music, and song examples with YouTube links, to better tune your head to what you ride.
To visually picture the rhythm of each style, I have included these waveform illustrations:
Classic single fin longboard
A classic single fin longboard, is slow to react, keeping the lines smooth between turns, it will slow down for a turn, then speeds back up to cruising speed.
The rider keeps body movements down to a minimum, while skillful foot positioning causes the board to react.

A Twin keel fish is glidey, draws smooth long arcing turns, and releases if it's pushed in the right places.

Classic Singlefin
A classic Singlefin smoothly glides and drives from the very little drag created around one fin, it is harder to get a turn out of because of the large center fin sitting deep in the water, but will turn tighter if pushed hard enough.

Alternative board
An alternative board can be any kind of shape that is different than the usual image of a surfboard shape, often interesting to look at, and interesting in the unique way that they maneuver, very fun and sometimes crazy.

High performance shortboard
A high performance shortboard is quick and lively, releases easily for fin free maneuvers, it's rider must keep fast on their feet to keep the minimally floating, thin board on top of the water.

This example is only to help you enjoy the way you think about what you ride, there are no real rules in music or in surfing, but there are many ways to enjoy them…
